  ELVA models

You will have seen from the Home page that I have decided that it is long overdue for ELVA to be acknowledged by the very precise and growing world of 1/43rd scale models. This is partly because it adds another facet to what I do, but more importantly puts the ELVA name in front of a different, and very intense, group of people of various ages who are more than likely to have never previously heard of ELVA. There is one precedent (apart from McLaren-Elva slot and plastic kits) as those of you with ten year memories will recall the beautiful GT160 models produced to the very highest standard and in very limited numbers of just 25 of each version worldwide, but more of that in a moment.

On past experience I do not expect much of a response from ELVA owners, which is a great pity. When you have enthusiasm for a marque, usually through ownership, it is the peripheral things which add colour and interest to a hobby … where else are you going to find beautiful hand built models, possibly authenticated by an individually signed Certificate from the driver or constructor, and offered as a real collectors item in very small numbers? But it will be the modellers who will wisely snap these up.

A subject for the forum perhaps?

THE "MpH Models" GT160

Way back in 1993, Tim Dyke came to see me at the workshop as he wanted to produce a high quality model of the pretty ELVA-BMW GT160 and it happened that two cars were there for him to inspect and measure to his hearts content. I also helped with some history and I was most impressed by his amazing attention to the smallest of detail. The resulting models were absolutely stunning and a great credit to a top modeller and a very nice guy too!

As mentioned earlier, Tim offered few of the built cars but lots of the same quality kits were sold … "kits that are right straight from the box." However, it is obvious that it is the challenge of the research and prototyping that really makes his heart pump wildly, and he soon moved on to the next project.

The good news is that following renewed contact with MpH, ELVA Racing has now bought all the umpteen bits and pieces from Tim with the view to offering kits and built models once again. I will be using all the moulds, patterns and suppliers previously chosen by Tim, and I am determined to offer the same high standard set by him nearly ten years ago.

This will now complete the picture for the GT160, surely the most 'remembered' of the cars built by ELVA and certainly still strikingly beautiful and desirable. Real aficionados will be able to have a road-going version (red, white or blue), the Le Mans version (Peacock blue) and of course the stunning orange V8 engined version by Ken Sheppard.

FUTURE PLANS ?

There are early discussions involving the 1964 ELVA-BMW Mk.7S as piloted by 'works' driver Tony Lanfranchi and from the same company the all conquering 1963 Elkhart Lake '500' ELVA-PORSCHE.
The Courier is a must (which version?), and also the front-engined ELVA F/J. However, the SPECIAL treat!! How about the Butterworth Mk.111 (Sabrina), although it would need an Archie Scott Brown leaning out of it on full drift. Wow! Watch this space.
