Another ELVA owner/driver who is regularly seen at many vintage race meetings in the United States is Joey Bojalad who competes in either his Elva-Climax Mk.VI (60/01) or the Ford powered early Elva Mk.VII (70/005). Joey has hugely impressive race results, particularly in the Mk.VI which of course has a very special history from the days when it was in the care of UK 'works' driver Chris Ashmore during the early 1960's. This prototype Mk.VI had its very first outing at the 1961 Boxing Day Meeting at Brands Hatch where Ashmore chased a very determined Graham Hill in a far more powerful Ferrari Testarossa into second place. Chris recently told me that he held back near the end of the race and could have passed Hill, but the cheering crowd and amazing Press reports showed that he had done the Elva team proud. A perfect and much needed moral lift for Frank Nichols and the reduced team who were recovering from the disastrous voluntary liquidation problems.
