Post MK VI 60/21
1961 MK VI first owned by Harvey Woodward, this little beauty is the one that went to the bottom of Lake Garnett in July 1963. Although reported in the Elva book as being the home for little fishies I assure you she is live and well and "She (still) Goes"!!! Yes, I know the front tire lifts when I push her too hard!!! She likes it and I save 25% on tire wear... It's a complicated relationship;)

Here's one of Harvey when the car was new, Harvey served as race chair at lake Garnett and luckily this was posted in a local newspaper, the media used long before the new fangled internet. This is just before the car took an Olympic style dive into Lake Garnett, if Harvey only knew... On another note, how space age must the Elva had looked next to that TD?

Here's a look at the track layout, Harvey went off at the chicane top right, it was reported that he was trying to avoid another accident. I also understand this was the second running of the Shelby Cobras, can you imagine this little car keeping up with those behemoths? Having driven this car for two years I can attest to it's ability in the twistys but the horse power in the straights belong to our dearly departed friend from Texas.... Hats (cowboy) off to you Carroll.

Here's a look at the start of the 1963 race, the little red Elva that could (had it not been for that dreadful lake) is about 11th back, this is the cover for a couple of the programs for future races (1968 at least) clearly showing Harvey hard at it. Incidentally Harvey ran an AC in the years just before this. I have been able to speak with most of the previous owners however dear Harvey passed just 6 months prior to my purchase of the car. I have it on good authority that he was a great guy and would have loved to talk about his racing days in the Elva. Not really a surprise, I find that anyone who is driving or has driven an Elva is kind and willing to share their experiences. I am not sure Father Frank knew that he was developing a product that would embed itself so deep in the hearts of soo many, there's someone I wish I had met... The original enthusiast of Elva.

Harvey supposedly won class at Stuttgart Ark, if anyone has info supporting this tidbit I would certainly like to hear the tale.

He was listed in '62 to be there but I think he actually did not make that race but did in the following years.

This is the link that I cherish most, Provided by a diligent John Lindsay he sent an email with this link simply asking "your Car?". I believe my response was in the way of wouldn't it be great if this were one of our cars (John has a pair of MKVI's at the time). After a little Google searching I found Mr. Ken Tripkos, 1975 Mid Am Champion in C Sports Racing with an Elva MKVI. Janos lists this car as the last Hooray of the MKVI, well maybe up to the time of printing the Elva Book, I have taken this to be a challenge to extend the history of this car, Stay tuned... Least I not forget- thanks John, your the greatest!!! After I touched base with Ken I doubled back with John, His reply? "This NEVER HAPPENS!!!" The result of my contact with gentleman Ken was the 1975 SCCA log book was reunited with the car. Thanks again John and Ken!!!

This is what I managed to do year one with the car, Rookie of the year seems like a nice addition to the legacy of the MKVI. Hard to believe I had to turn 49 before I was recognized as the Rookie of The Year!!! Late Bloomer I guess? Incidentally this was the rookie car for Ken Tripkos as well, Ken is currently technical and competition director for SCCA. I will share more on this later, great guy.

60/21 is now receiving a much needed make over, expensive but she tells me she's worth the while. Many thanks to Roger for the answers to my annoying questions. Will share a pic or two in time. Going to renumber if no objection, 7 is the number of mums children, after all she was named Elva before the first car was built, fitting tribute to a wonderful lady... She still goes!

Just a peek at the new paint scheme, she's a bit shy still...
