Post Radiators Courier
Having fitted a 1950cc Stage 3 "B" Engine to my Courier I am getting concerned that the orig., Radiator may not be up to the job. I have two rads both of which have the cooling tubes running verticaly, and the fins horizontally. With the rad when fitted sloping backwards from the vertical the passage of air through it is some what obstructed.(by the fins) Many years ago I remember changing the Rad on my racing Sprite for one with the cooling tubes running horizontal and the fins vertical. It strikes me this arrangement would work better on the Courier as the vertical fins would let the air pass through them without obstruction. Any comments please. Thanks Oldgit.

It is my understanding that x flow (cross flow) radiators or heat exchangers, are more efficient than vertical flow. I hate to give GM any credit for anything other than the small block V-8, they did put the first x flow rads in the Corvette back in 63. It's also my understanding that anymore than 3 rows maybe 4 are more efficient as the air passing through the 4th or more rows the air becomes preheated.

Hi Tucker, thanks for the reply, you are confirming what I had in my mind. I shall investigate the poss . of converting my rad to a cross flow with two side header tanks instead of top and bottom the area of finned cooling tubes is marginally bigger than the existing. At the moment I have three tubes and even if the cross flow is not a runner I was going to get the core rebuilt with four, I note your comments on more than four and they make sence. Barry.

Barry,
You can always install a remote header tank or reservoir somewhere in the engine compartment. A few x flow rads have side tanks with the rad cap in them, but most have the remote reservoir.
