Re: THE 2017 GOODWOOD REVIVAL .. WET & WILD!
The 20th Revival meeting has been and gone, and as mentioned elsewhere the old ''ELVA Engineering' van was back and photographed by many. The ELVA presence was slightly diluted this year, and the showers of heavy rain did little to encourage the huge crowds to wear their period summer outfits, but the sale of umbrellas was brisk and the event almost became a festival of Mary Poppins lookalikes. The racing was made more spectacular by the rain but there were no serious 'offs' and thankfully all the ELVA contingent left the circuit with bodies and bodywork intact. The beautiful '300' series Formula Junior owned by Nick Grewal sat on pole in the Chichester Cup race but sadly DNF despite some very spirited driving by Andrew Hibberd. This car #300/001 has a history going back to Mark Donohue and has just been fully rebuilt, this being its first outing since that rebuild. Will be one to watch..! The second ELVA FJ entry was the '200' series car featured in the article at
http://www.elva.com/news/20170416-formu ... ration.php which is now owned by Chris Alford, but again was unfortunately a DNF. This car is now offered for sale at
https://www.racecarsdirect.com/Advert/D ... junior-200The very popular Madgwick Cup race included four ELVA sports racers, three Mk.V's and the extremely pretty Mk.IV owned and driven by Rod Begbie. The owner/drivers of the group of Mk.V s/racers were Ralf Emmerling, Louis Zurstrassen and Malcolm Paul, all of whom finished with highest placing to Malcolm at 8th. Finally the Whitsun Trophy Race included the ELVA built McLaren big-bore sports racers mixing it with a batch of GT140s and those other marques with plenty of grunt. One of the GT140 entries was positioned to the back of the grid as it was fitted with non period dampers (etc?) but it worked its way through the pack to win on a rain soaked track. See the race classifications for further details ...
While a fabulous event, the retail aspect has begun to dominate and it is so crowded .. it's the Members Meeting for me in future .. but let's keep that a secret!
