The Kyalami 9-hour revival 'set to thrill'
(posted 28 September 2007)

Revival to resurrect trackside traditions in a weekend of racing and entertainment

In amongst the many people who I met up with at Goodwood was Gordon Palmer of Autofreight fame ... Gordon helped us send cars to the States, and sometimes back, and despite now being 'retired', is given the huge responsibility of bringing all the fantastic cars to both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revival Meeting, and returning them after the events. Gordon mentioned the revival of the KYALAMI 9-HOUR race which of course was an amazing endurance event and next year will be the big 50th Anniversary meeting. There was also much enthusiasm for these events from Roger Pearce of the EMGEE Workshop and anyone entering and needing team support should contact him at emgee@mweb.co.za

Kyalami's 9-hour Revival on Saturday 17th November 2007 offers the International historic racer the amazing opportunity of a splendid day racing at the fabulous Kyalami circuit but also the chance to explore the delights of South Africa and attend three other amazing events nearby. There is also the 50th Anniversary Kyalami celebrations in 2008 which will be even more spectacular and so you need to contact Michele Lupini for further details via email michele@carsinaction.co.za or go to www.motoring.iafrica.com/9hour for latest updates.

Kyalami 9-Hour Race Meeting

Legend re-born: The spirit of Kyalami’s 9-hour, one of the most evocative international endurance races of the 1960s and ’70s, returns to the South African track this November.

Parkers are proud to be appointed Travel Partners in association with the revival of this evocative and historic event. As a team we have a special and long running interest in motorsport, and are thrilled at the prospect of the ‘9-hour’ returning to Kyalami. The Revival first and foremost celebrates that great original Kyalami 9-hour — one of SA motorsport’s greatest legends.

The 9-hour Revival recalls those halcyon days when Ferrari, Porsche, Matra, Ford, Lola, Chevron and so many others battled for glory in front of crowds approaching 100 000 who were thrilled by the cars racing through the Kyalami summer sunshine and well into the night. Names like David Piper, Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Dickie Attwood, Jo Siffert, Mario Andretti and Clay Regazzoni and so many others were regular visitors, many of them winning that great race.

Now Kyalami will celebrate those great days with the 9-hour Revival catering for cars that were originally eligible for the 9-hour race competing in classes split into Pre-1966, Pre-‘73 and Post-‘72 cars running in a series of mini-endurance races throughout a 9-hour period beginning with a Le Mans start at midday on Saturday 17 November.

Fans will be entertained to nine hours of almost non-stop historic endurance racing action of the highest calibre, while off-track activities will also live up to that halcyon 9-hour legend

Overseas interest including a request from 6-time 9-hour race winner David Piper to bring the original Ferrari 250 LM with which he won the ’63 race back to Kyalami along with significant local interest should ensure full fields of the most charismatic cars that ever raced in South Africa, are among the many on track highlights expected at the 9-hour Revival.
