This Elva factory MkII prototype was first road registered in June 1956, acquiring the “plate” KDY 68 that she has carried ever since. She made her race debut in July 1956 and was raced frequently at Brands Hatch, Goodwood and Oulton Park during 1956 and ’57 by Robbie Mackenzie‐Low and Archie Scott Brown. Originally built with a Ford engine and fiber‐glass body, KDY 68 was significantly upgraded between the ’56 and ’57 seasons. The body was replaced with aluminum, the mounting point for the experimental De Dion suspension was modified, and the Ford engine was replaced with a 1097cc Coventry Climax FWA unit, #FWA 400/6.6780 sourced from Cooper cars.

20 years after that 1957 season, the car was being used on public roads in England, the body painted blue and with head ‐lights and turn signals cut into the body, these still clearly visible as repairs today. The car was converted back to track specification and spent the next 20 years in Europe before being returned to England in 1997 where Roger Dunbar and a team including several former Elva employees completed a full restoration. Only then was the car identified as the factory prototype when “KDY 68” is found embossed in the aluminum body as it was stripped. The car participated in the first Goodwood Revival in 1998, driven again for the first time in 40 years by Robbie Mackenzie-Low.

The car was sold to the US west coast in the early 2000's and has stayed there since. I bought her in 2012 and raced her six times in 2013 at CSRG, HMSA and Monterey Historics. After a gearbox failure highlighted the fragility of a 66 year old drive-chain, reluctantly the 1957 engine was removed in 2013 and now sits in the garage alongside the car. A period‐correct Climax FWB replacement was sourced from England and drives the car today, detuned to replicate the power characteristics of the original FWA. The remainder of the car chassis, suspension, and body are original from the 1957 season.
