Post ELVA 60th Birthday Party at the Lightening Circuit NJ
What was there not to like! The VRG organised event at the Lightening Circuit near Millville was superb in every way thanks to a great group of enthusiastic people, some determined racing, excellent hospitality, wonderful weather .. oh and the cars were pretty good too!!
There was an ELVA presence of around twenty five cars Including sports racers and both track and street versions of the various Courier types. No Formula Juniors which was a shame but did not spoil the party. The Friday evening Pub gathering was busy and eventful, particularly as I was more than surprised but absolutely delighted to be awarded the Mark Donohue Cup by Michael Oritt, and another special award was made to Bob & Sherry Engberg for their epic journey of close to 4500 miles to reach the event having set off from the San Diego area some two months earlier! The pretty ELVA Mk.II was towed on an open trailer by the faithful VW Camper (which did not have any cheating software!) ... true dedication to the historic/vintage movement.
The Mark Donohue Cup was generously provided by the VRG, and the Spirit of Vintage Racing award by Frank Mons III. Hugely appreciated by the recipients ... thank you.
We were all also presented with a lovely pottery cup which had been produced at the request of Team D.I.R.T. being Tucker Madawick, Lynne and bubbly Erica of Autosport Inc., .. lots of thanks to Tucker and crew. Wonderful gesture.
There was another award made near the end of the event which related to the 'Best Elva'; again reflecting the spirit, commitment and dedication to the ELVA family, this trophy provided from the UK by Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive. There were quite a list of contenders as many people had made such an effort to be at the NJ event, but again it was Bob & Sherry Engberg who were the delighted recipients ... very much deserved so well done to both .. to Bob for all his massive input on and off the track, and to Sherry for coping with Bob for two months in a Camper van!! There is a whole bunch of people to thank but let's start with the folk at the VRG and in particular Michael Oritt and Butch O'Connor for their input. I would also thank Stan Mason for bringing the tent and banners, some excellent IPA beer and telling the donkey story! Plus of course EVERYONE who bought an ELVA car to the event, or attended anyway having often travelled very long distances. It was great to see so many cheery faces and enthusiastic knowledgeable owners ... cannot wait for the next gathering. Well done each and everyone.
I have received a lot of photographs and will be sorting these to show the best and links to identify cars, owners and/or drivers as appropriate. If you have not been mentioned yet ... you will be! Meanwhile here are a few to whet the appetite... RAD
